Doom 2 and Wolfenstein RPGs May Be Heading to the iPhone [IPhone]

Gaming, Apple, iPhone, Doom, id, sdk, iPhone 3G, Doom 2, Doom 2 rpg, Id Software, John Carmack, Todd Hollenshead, Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein rpg No Comments »

I don’t think John Carmack had a version of the Doom 2 and Wolfenstein RPGs in mind when he recently said that id Software was bringing something “very special” to the iPhone, but CEO Todd Hollenshead has revealed that he would like to bring both of these games to the device, which he claims is more powerful than a DS and PSP combined. The software is already being worked on for other platforms, but Hollenshead admits that it is too early to tell whether the games will be ported to the iPhone.

The small team at id means that the company can only work on one game at a time, so they are toying with the idea of pairing up with a publishing partner to get a game running on the iPhone. However, Hollenshead is taking a cautious approach. He explains that games on the iPhone “are going to be competing with all of those other things you can do on the iPhone that are pretty cool” and that “It does raise the bar on what you need to do from a game standpoint.”

So, when analyzing statements from Carmack and Hollenshead together, it seems that id Software definitely wants to bring games to the iPhone, but the two leaders have different viewpoints on the situation. Carmack is gung-ho and talking exclusive titles that are a “graphical tour de force” while Hollenshead is cautious and talking about porting titles that are already in development. We will just have to wait and see who gets their way. [Kotaku]

Nintendo’s Wii Classic Controller and GameCube GamePad Getting a Temporary Ban on Sales [Nintendo]

Gaming, Nintendo, Nintendo Wii, Wii, law, Legal, lawsuit, classic controller, Controllers, gamecube, Ban, sales, Gamepad, Suits, gamecube controller No Comments »

As a result of Nintendo’s loss in court to a Texas-based company called Anascape, the judge ruled that all sales of the Wii Classic Controller and the GameCube controller need to be temporarily halted until funds can be placed into an escrow account. What’s the impact on you, Joe or Dan Consumer? Starting today, July 23, all sales of those controllers AND GameCube systems will be placed on hold, meaning that you should really try and find a place to buy these accessories now if you need them soon. On the bright side, Nintendo’s Nunchuck controller isn’t affected by this ruling about analog sticks, so you’re safe if you just want to play Wii games. [1up via Kotaku]

Microsoft: DirectX 11 To Use GPU For Parallel Processing [Directx]

DirectX 11 is coming, and it looks pretty awesome. Sure, you get advancements in shading and better support for multi-core machines, but what’s really got our heads turning is the concept of letting programmers use the GPU in your video card to do some of the heavy lifting, meaning your graphics chip becomes a second, parallel processor. While the idea itself isn’t new, this is the first we’ve heard of DirectX using such technology and we’re sure it’ll have PC gaming fanboys drooling when it rolls out, whenever that happens to be. Xbox 360’s “Lips” Karaoke Game Microphone Has Motion Sensing, Vegas Lounge Lights [Gaming]

Gaming, Peripherals, Xbox 360, Accessories, Mic, microphone, e3, e3 2008, E32008, lips No Comments »

Could the rumored upcoming “Lips” accessory + game to the Xbox 360 have the most advanced karaoke microphone for a game yet? Quite possibly. The game’s made by iNiS, a team that’s no stranger to music games, and features the accessory that pulses in time with your singing, plus detects how you swing it around when crooning in order to score extra points. It seems fantastic, but no amount of peripheral distractions will distract from how really awful your singing is. I mean seriously, vocal lessons aren’t that expensive. [Gamekyo via Kotaku]

Interview: Collecting Every Nintendo Game & Watch Ever [Nintendo]

Gaming, Nintendo, Nintendo DS, Ds, game boy, Game & Watch No Comments »

Before there was the Game Boy, there was Game & Watch. DS Fanboy has a sitdown with two dudes who scoured the world to collect every Game & Watch handheld ever produced: 60 in all, each one a unique and delicious plastic bundle with a single game, like Snoopy Tennis or Donkey Kong Jr. How obsessed is collector Michael Panayiotakis?

After collecting them all, he reset his goal and sold most of them to collect only sealed games, ones in their original blister pack or rare versions (like the special edition Super Mario Bros. box he spent $1200 on). They’ve also got a pretty sweet gallery retrospective of the Game & Watch that’s definitely worth checking out on this lazy weekend. [DS Fanboy]

Acer G24 World’s Highest Contrast Gaming Monitor (50,000:1) [Acer G24]

Gaming, PCs, Monitors, acer, Acer g24, g24 No Comments »

Acer’s G24 gaming monitor is apparently the only one badass enough for its Predator gaming PC. Besides being slathered in the same hue of rusty orange, according to Acer, this 24-incher is the world’s highest contrast monitor, with a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Stuff should pop big, in other words.

Other specs: 1920×1200 res, 2ms response time, 400 nits, HDMI and DVI out ports. The arguably most important numbers—price and date—are nowhere to be found. But “not cheap” and “later” sound like reasonable guesses! [Acer via Engadget]
