Microsoft Wants You to Pay Monthly Subscription for Office and Services You Won’t Use [Microsoft]

officeinset.jpgMicrosoft is testing a new bundle of fun codenamed “Albany” which rolls Office Home and Student, Windows Live OneCare, Office Live Workspace and some other Live services into a package that you’ll pay a monthly fee for. It’s this kind of thing, turning software into service you have to keep paying for and never actually own, that makes reports of Windows 7’s modularity kinda scary. Here’s what “Albany” will ask you to pony up for every month in real-world terms:

•Office-productivity software that can be had for $119 at Amazon.com, but is likely already installed on a user’s computer.
•A “collaboration” service most home users will have no need for
•Windows Live OneCare, a PC-security and maintenance service which Microsoft already sells as a subscription
•Three Web services Microsoft already offers for free

Wow, what a deal! Please don’t let your mother fall for this. I’ll keep an eye on my mom, you watch yours, and maybe we can stem the tide of perpetually paying for software here and now. [ZDNet via Valleywag]

Clippy R.I.P. - The World Wasn’t Ready For You?

microsoft, Software, clippy, office 2007, assistant, Ui No Comments »

useless.jpgWith recent tragedies surrounding our space an pornography programs, one major death has been passed over by the media. We are speaking of the late, not-necessarily-beloved Clippy who was brutally murdered out of Office 2007. Here is what Jensen Harris, Office Group Program Manager, had to say about the recent death.

One of the tenets that we had about the new UI in 2007 was that we only wanted to create one way to get to all features. We didn’t want to have menus and toolbars and Clippy as parallel, slightly different ways of getting to the features, so Clippy as a way of helping you decode cryptic menus and toolbars didn’t make sense, because we didn’t have those cryptic menus and toolbars anymore…it Although I think that social user interface wasn’t ready for the mainstream yet

At the age of 10, Clippy was just a child at (his?) death. In private, Clippy often spoke of leaving the office behind for a simpler life. We hope that he found it…wherever he may be.

Also, I freaking hate Clippy.– Mark Wilson

Microsoft Clippy, RIP: 1997 - 2007

Not too long after MobileESPN breathed new life, now we’ve got the unfortunate duty of informing the world that Microsoft finally axed the most annoying aspect of Office has decided to leave “Clippy” behind in Office 2007. We suspected something was brewing when the iconic figure started donning a 3D skirt in Japan, but a brief interview with Office’s group program manager revealed that the clip is indeed dead. While it had been fading for awhile due to an apparent lack of mass fanfare, and was even turned off by default in Office 2003, it seems that Clippy fans will be forced to stick with now-antiquated versions of the Office suite in order to keep their darling on screen. But don’t fret too much, as the countdown until someone crafts a freeware app re-instilling a Clippy rendition into Office begins… now.
